the film
Over the Border opens on a quiet evening along the newly built United States – Mexican border wall. The wall is state of the art and supposedly impassable. But not even this wall prevents illegal border crossing attempts, and on this night, patrolling drones spot a donkey meandering toward the wall—a donkey which turns out to be two best friends, KURT and COLE, in costume. The big shocker is that the border agents are Mexican, and the pair are trying to sneak into Mexico. The American economy has collapsed, the United States is now a third world country, and many Americans are illegally emigrating south of the border. And Mexico, just like the US used to be, is just as determined to keep those illegal gringos out.
Years ago, Kurt and his sister LAURA were in an accident which left Laura confined to a wheelchair. Kurt has been using all his extra money to pay for her healthcare, rent, and dance lessons for her daughter Abby. When Kurt unexpectedly loses his job at Toymigo, he is forced out of the company apartment that he’s been living in. He has no other choice except to make it to the promised land of Mexico if he’s going to continue to help his sister and niece. After many attempts, Kurt finally makes it across the border, and learns what it is like to be a minority, and how hard it is to find work. Kurt meets a woman who ends up helping him, and he finds her hard to resist. But living the Mexican Dream isn’t as easy as he imagined. There are many bumps in the road, and Kurt isn’t willing to give up, even if it ends up killing him.
Over the Border is an entertaining and comedic opportunity for us to look in a reversed mirror, and a reminder that regardless of where we come from or where we are going, we should care about each other.
